It is an alkene that is classified in industry as higher olefin and an alpha-olefin, the latter term meaning that the double bond is located at the alpha (primary) position, endowing the compound with higher reactivity and thus useful chemical properties. 1-Hexene is an industrially significant linear alpha olefin. 1-Hexene is a colourless liquid.

生产方法
1.将1mol己胺悬浮在9mol25%氢氧化钠水溶液中，将4mol硫酸二甲酯分多批加入，在冷却下摇荡，季铵盐以粘稠油状物分出，然后油状季铵盐溶于1.5mol20%稀硫酸，回流2h，冷却，加入稍过量的氢氧化钡溶液，滤出硫酸钡沉淀，滤液在50℃减压缩，加入4mol50%氢氧化钾进行蒸馏，馏出液分去水层，油层用稀硫酸洗涤去胺，再用水洗，干燥后再蒸馏得已烯，收率66%。 用于制造香料、染料及合成树脂。
