1,2-Butanediol is a vic-diol (glycol) first described by Charles-Adolphe Wurtz in 1859. It is produced industrially as a byproduct of the production of 1,4-butanediol from butadiene, and is also a byproduct of the catalytic hydrocracking of starches and sugars such as sorbitol to ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.[note 2] It is used to produce polyester resins and plasticizers, and is a potential feedstock for the industrial production of α-ketobutyric acid, a precursor to many amino acids.

生产方法
由环氧丁烷水合而得。将0.1%硫酸水溶液加热至60℃，于1h内滴加1，2-环氧丁烷，在60-70℃保温反应0.5h，用40%液碱中和至pH7-7.5，减压蒸去水后，再经精馏，收集110℃（3.72kPa）馏分而得成品，收率80%以上。 用于有机合成，制备2-氨基丁醇等。
